Michael Charles helps schools, organizations, and communities turn music into a vehicle for leadership, confidence, and human growth — drawing on 25+ years of teaching, executive coaching, and organizational psychology.
Michael Charles started teaching at 13 — music and English to immigrants in his neighborhood. He's been developing people ever since.
He performed with All City Band, State Level Band Competitions, and the United States Air Force Band of the Rockies. He holds a BBA with a Music minor and a Master's in Industrial and Organizational Psychology — the science of how people grow, perform, and lead. He started his corporate career at JPMorgan Chase, became a Founding Partner of Maxwell Leadership where he coached executives and teams across the country, and built Harborfields Music Center, a music school designed to develop confident, capable kids through music.
In 2009, he founded Light the World Foundation, a 501(c)(3) he led as President for 11 years. Through the Foundation, Michael and his team funded full-tuition scholarships for hundreds of children across six communities in Haiti, ran the Youth-Max Leadership Development program for youth in New York, and produced an Annual Arts & Music Festival that raised funds and elevated young performers year after year.
What you get on stage is the result of all of that: a speaker who understands music, leadership science, and what it actually takes to move people, at scale, across cultures, and in real lives.

Available as 45-minute keynotes, half-day workshops, or full-day intensives.
Most parents and educators think music lessons teach music. They don't. Music lessons — taught right — teach focus, resilience, performance under pressure, and the ability to fail in public and come back stronger. This talk reframes music education as one of the most powerful leadership development tools we have for kids.
Your audience will walk away with:
Musicians spend their lives doing what most professionals fear most — performing under pressure, in front of people, with no margin for error. This talk takes the disciplines of high-level musicianship and applies them directly to building high-performing teams and cultures that show up fully when the stakes are highest.
Your audience will walk away with:
Michael's path didn't go in a straight line. From teaching at 13, to JPMorgan Chase, to Maxwell Leadership, to building a music school — he's lived the question every founder eventually asks: how do you build something that actually matters? This talk is part personal story, part practical playbook for leaders building purpose-driven organizations.
Your audience will walk away with:
Faculty development, leadership programs, parent education nights, student assemblies.
State and national conferences, association meetings, teacher development workshops.
Parent education events, community forums, family enrichment series.
Leadership academies, summer programs, mentorship initiatives, scholarship events.
Leadership retreats, men's and youth programs, community gatherings.
Team offsites, leadership summits, keynote slots, executive development.
"Michael Charles is an excellent leader of the John Maxwell Team. He provided an environment where not only did we learn from him, but everyone was encouraged to participate and learn from each other. I highly recommend him to anyone who is in Project Management, involved with any non-profit group, or who simply wants to improve their results."
"You have given me great guidance to develop my leadership skills. I am grateful to have found you through social media. I went with my gut. You over-delivered with your guidance, dedication, and knowledge."
"Participating in the mastermind study gave me a new awareness of leadership and the confidence I needed to discuss leadership effectiveness at a job interview for a management position at a large commercial bank. I landed the job and started to apply the principles covered with great results."
"Thank you Michael Charles and team for bringing music education to our amazing community. We are so blessed to learn from you and your professional educators."
